Beware the Phantom Load

Posted by thornton On December - 7 - 2010

Your apartment is not haunted, but there may still be a monster or two hanging around. Beware of…the phantom load!

Alright, it’s really nothing to be scared of, but you should avoid it! A phantom load is when your appliances drain the energy while plugged in but not in use. Do you have a lot of phantoms in your apartment?

A way to avoid wasting energy, and saving on your your power bill is by using power strips throughout your apartment. When you’re not using things such as your TV, DVD player, or computer you can simply flip the switch and stop wasting energy.

What are the little things you do around your apartment to be a little greener?

You can call these “Power Food Combos”

Posted by thornton On December - 4 - 2010

Do you ever eat oatmeal and have a glass of orange juice with it? This combination just seems to taste better than having each individually. It turns out that this may not just be coincidence.

A recent study has found that many foods we often eat together are actually even better for us in a pairing. Scientists are calling this “food synergy,” and it might be the explanation as to why we desire to have certain foods together. Here are some common food pairings that both help the good stuff enter your system while keeping more of the bad out:

Sleeping really isn’t my forte.

Posted by thornton On December - 1 - 2010

When I graduated college I thought transitioning from the college lifestyle to the 9-5 work schedule would be impossible. Of course I, like everyone else, made the change and it actually wasn’t too difficult. The only problem that I’ve yet to adjust for my new working lifestyle is my sleep schedule. This week I’ve been averaging right around 5 hours of sleep, so I know that I have to make a change. Soon I hope to be sleeping like a baby.

Are you burned out?

Posted by thornton On November - 21 - 2010

Lately I’ve been finding myself stressed beyond belief. I can’t focus on work because the deadlines and workload are sometimes too much to take! This is so bizarre to me because it wasn’t long ago that I walked into work with a big smile across my face.

This is what I call a case of the burned out blues. Something I used to get a kick out of I have now started to view as a chore. I know I love what I do, so I’ve decided to snap out of it & get my excitement back!

Get a hobby – try bowling!

Need to Focus?

Posted by thornton On November - 15 - 2010

It’s Monday, and on beautiful, sunny days like today it can be really hard to sit down and get to work. Getting focused seems like an impossible task, especially after lunch. Maybe if I’d eating something different I wouldn’t have this problem.

One of my favorite foods is salmon, and it is actually a great food to eat to increase brain power. Salmon contains a lot of omega-3 fatty acids which just so happen to be to be one of the primary building-blocks in brain tissue. If you’re looking to improve your brain power in the long-run, salmon is still the way to go. The fish contains niacin which has been shown to slow the rate of cognitive decline.

How will you get your salmon? I’m thinking…sushi!
